Thinking of starting your own LAN Party?

Running your own PC game LAN Party is a fun and rewarding experience. There are several types of LAN parties you can run. These include small private parties of a few friends playing a few PC games, up to huge professional LAN parties with hundreds of gamers from all over the world. Medium and larger LAN parties may attract sponsors like ours. Some of the PC games usually include first person shooters (FPS), but can also include realtime simulators and even racing PC games. Let's talk about some different types of LAN parties and you can decide which one is right for you.

  • Small private LAN parties with a few friends - typically at someone's home
  • Small public LAN parties - typically five to ten gamers
  • Medium LAN parties - ten to 30 gamers with or without sponsors
  • Large LAN parties - thirty to 100 gamers with sponsors
  • Huge LAN parties - typically ran by professional event staff with 100+ gamers

There are several resources available on both the Internet and in books and magazines for you to do plenty of research. I will include some links I found useful later. Additionally, I will include discussions on LAN party facilities, server and network equipment, planning & managing your LAN party, games and activities, and approaching sponsors.

I have read this book cover to cover. It is an indespensible resource for starting and running a LAN party. I use it all the time as a reference. Click the book to pick it up:

A word or two about sponsors: So, you want to offer swag at your LAN party. You need to take into consideration that first and foremost, there are no free lunches. Don't just fill out a form and expect the latest video card to fall out of the sky. So, have I crushed your hopes? Don't sweat it. My point is, you must have something to offer a sponsor. More often than not, you offer exposure to PC gamers, the company's target market. The more PC gamers you have at your lan party, the better your chances for sponsorship and give aways.

Here are some things to know about your party that sponsors may be interested in:

- Number of gamers attending your party (have sign ups on sites like www.lanaddict.com)
- Demographics such as average age, income, types of games played, and interests of your attendees
-
Types of personal computers or PCs gamers play
- Types of PC games gamers play
- Location of your lan party (did they already sponsor a LAN party in your area?

Plan as far in advance as possible. Most sponsors need at least a month notice. Most won't want more than three months notice though. This would be a good place for you to get a lesson on fiscal calendars and the significance of a quarter (three months, not the coin), but I'll let you google that.
